Cariocas and fans of Rio de Janeiro can now register domains with the extension “.rio.br”, designated specifically for the city. This option is available starting today at noon as part of the Cities campaign by NIC.br.

In over 7 months, over 50 cities have earned their own categories, such as São Paulo, Florianópolis, and Recife. The campaign concludes with the introduction of the category for Rio de Janeiro. The full list of cities is available on the campaign page.

Brazilian internet users actively participated in selecting the city categories by providing over 10,600 suggestions and voting for their preferred categories, as reported by the organization.

The city is given its second domain category, which is Rio.br.

The initial custom domain in Rio de Janeiro was introduced in 2015 by the city government with the creation of “.rio”, which can be registered currently. A unique feature of “.rio” is the requirement of providing proof of address, whereas “.rio.br” is open for registration to individuals or organizations from any location.

Interested individuals can register a “.rio.br” domain on the registration website or through a hosting company offering national domain registration, with prices starting at R$ 40 per year.

The news was revised on January 29, 2018 to include details about the conclusion of the campaign following the introduction of the “rio.br” category.

The publication date was 17/01/2018 and was updated on 29/01/2018.
