Transferring a domain involves moving it from its current registrar to a new company, with the domain’s renewal then being handled by the new company.
Why Should You Move Your Domain
The transfer of a domain can be particularly appealing if the renewal cost is taken into consideration when moving to a new company.
Domain prices are not standardized and can differ significantly between companies, with some providing a lower initial price that results in higher renewal costs.
It is beneficial to review the renewal cost of a domain with the company where it was originally registered, even if you are not considering switching companies. If the cost is reasonable, make use of this guide to facilitate the transfer process.
The methods for transferring national and international domains are distinct, so we will examine them individually. National domains are those that conclude with .br, whereas international domains do not require a country code ending and can solely contain a category (e.g., .com).
Before transferring a domain, there are important factors to consider.
Before you begin transferring your domain, there are some important points that need your attention.
- It is crucial to ensure that your registered data is current. Your registration email will be used by the new domain registrar company for communication. If you need to make updates, there is a 60-day waiting period for transfers. You can verify your data with your domain registrar or check the Whois database. Note that if identity protection is enabled, your data cannot be checked via Whois; only the domain registration company will have access to this information.
- Any DNS modification should be completed before or after the transfer process, and not during it. Making this change during the transfer may result in incomplete or outdated information being transferred to the new company.
- When you transfer a national domain (.br), all other national domains associated with it will also be transferred to the new company by default. Nevertheless, it is still possible to transfer only one domain if desired. Registration.br provides instructions for this process on their help page under “Contact Management” section, specifically item 5.3.
Domain transfer deadlines
For a domain transfer to occur, it must have been registered or renewed for over 60 days with a renewal date exceeding 30 days. International domains must meet these requirements to transfer, while there is an alternative for national domains like (.br).
If you wish to transfer a .br domain within 60 days, you must first cancel the current provider through the Registry.br website. Registry.br will then manage your domain until the waiting period is over, after which you can transfer administration to any other provider.
Transfer time and expenses
- Domain transfer duration can range widely among different companies, with the process potentially taking up to 10 days. Your website typically remains operational throughout the transfer, so there is no cause for concern.
- The cost of transferring a domain can differ depending on the company. Some companies offer free transfers, while others charge the same fee as domain registration, which typically includes renewal for another year.
Now that you have acquired all this information, we will detail the process of transferring a domain step by step.
How to move a country-specific domain (.br)
In this guide, we will learn how to move the registration of all your country-specific domains. If you wish to transfer just a few domains, refer to the Registry assistance page mentioned earlier.
The procedures outlined here can be utilized to transfer national domains from the Registry.br to a different company, from a different company to the Registry.br, or even between different companies.
The transfer is facilitated by the Registry site in these instances because it is accountable for registering and managing all national domains.
Here are the necessary steps to effectively transfer a national domain (.br):
- Please log in to the Registry.br site. If your domain is not registered there, you must register by creating an account on the website. Use the same document (CPF or CNPJ) that you used to register with the domain registrar.
- Click on the “TITULARITY” box and then select “EDIT INFORMATION” when you log into your account.
- Search for “Serve SERVICES” and select “Choose a different provider”.
- Choose the company to transfer your domain to and click “SAVE”. If transferring to Registry.br from another company, select “NONE”. Note that saving will transfer registration for all your domains. If moving your domain from a company to Registry.br, the process is complete. An email confirming the change will be sent by the entity. If transferring your domain to a company, proceed to the final step.
- Fill out the form provided by the company to transfer your domain. This final step is handled outside of Registry.br. Most companies have a form for the transfer process, available on their website or by requesting assistance. Once you complete the form, the company will contact you to finalize the transfer process.

How to move a domain from one country to another
If your domain is global, there should be no significant issues in transferring it. Two examples will be provided to help clarify each step. Let’s proceed to the important information.
Unlock your domain name.
The process to unlock the domain differs depending on the company. When you access the company’s control panel, find your registered domains and locate the unlock option, which may be represented as a lock or labeled as “edit settings”.
To clarify, we provide two examples.
UOL Host is an example.
When you access the customer panel on UOL Host, go to the “Domains” section, find the domain you want to transfer in the domain list, and select the menu in the “Manage” column. Finally, click on “Change contact information” as indicated.

A new webpage will open to modify the contact information for the chosen domain. Click on “change” next to the registrar to unlock it. The following image illustrates the process.

SuperDomains Example
Log in to the SuperDomains website, go to the control panel, navigate to the “Domains” section on the homepage or “My Domains” in the menu, and select the button for domain settings.

Click on “register log” on the left side, followed by selecting “Disable Log Block” as shown in the image.

Obtain the authorization code from the existing company.
This code might be referred to by various names such as authorization key, EPP code, auth-info code, and others, so do not be surprised if you encounter different terminology than what is provided here.
Obtaining the code is straightforward. The button to request the code is typically found on the same page where you unlocked your domain, with its location varying based on the dashboard of each company. Once you have the code, copy it and store it in a readily accessible location.

By selecting “change” in the previous step, the key will be generated automatically and displayed as shown in the image below.

SuperDomains Example
After unlocking your domain, select “Speed EPP Code” from the same column as the “Registration log” screenshot.

Copy the code that will be displayed and paste it in a convenient location for quick access when needed.

Transfer your domain to the company where you are currently registered.
The final phase is comparable to the concluding step of transferring national domains. Many businesses will offer a form for completion and request the authorization key received in the prior step.
The process differs significantly among companies, making it impossible to outline the final steps here. However, rest assured that the contracted company will provide you with detailed instructions to complete the transfer. Furthermore, most companies have a webpage on their dashboard explaining how to carry out the transfer.
Authorize the domain transfer.
The transfer of global domains requires the involvement of four parties: the domain owner, the original registering company, the current hosting company, and ICANN, the governing body for internet domain registrations.
You will be required to verify and approve the domain transfer by following the instructions provided in an email sent to the registered email address. Once you click on the link in the email, you will be directed to a page to confirm the transfer, and upon acceptance, a confirmation screen will appear.

The entire process typically lasts between 4 and 30 days, but it is often finished within approximately 10 days, as reported by domain registration firms.
Summary
Transferring a domain is not as complex as you may have believed. By following these steps and considering the information provided, you can transfer your domain smoothly.
