If you have a website, be aware that some of the personal information you entered during login is accessible online.

All domain registrants have their information listed in a virtual public directory called Whois, which contains details of millions of individuals and organizations registering domains.

Domain privacy, also known as Domain Privacy, is a way to protect the owners of certain websites from excessive exposure.

Will we concentrate on this subject?

What does domain privacy entail? Let’s explore its definition.

Domain privacy is a service that conceals the personal details of domain registrants in the Whois database.

Domain registration data is typically public information, but to protect individuals’ privacy, some companies offer a data protection service known as “domain privacy” or “Whois protection.” This service is widely used, especially in the United States.

    How domain privacy operates

When an individual conducts a search on Whois, the following information is displayed:

    • The registrant’s contact information, including name, address, phone number, and email, is provided in the registry.
    • Administrative and technical point of contact.
    • Domain information includes details such as the domain name, registration company, server details, status, registration date, expiration date, and updates.
    • CPF or CNPJ (applicable only for domains ending in .br)

The personal information of those who register in a private domain is not displayed. Instead of showing the domain owner’s name, phone number, address, and email, the registration displays the company information.

To find out what information is currently available, you need to use Whois. The database is decentralized, and various websites offer a search system for queries, like the one provided here. Simply enter your domain name in the search bar.

Who is eligible for the service (and who is not)

Domain privacy is applicable to some international records but not all. If your domain ends with “.br,” you are unable to utilize domain privacy services due to restrictions imposed by the Registry.br as per CGI.br’s policy.

Whois queries for .br domains show the domain holder’s contact information, including their full name, email, and either CPF or CNPJ for individuals and companies, respectively.

The Registry does not reveal the personal address and phone number of individuals in their records. Also, the contact email can be that of a professional or the technical administrator of your website.

The domain privacy service can be hired for international domains, except for certain country code top-level domains and new terminations. Check with your domain registrar for service availability and avoid providing false information to prevent domain cancellation.

Advantages of utilizing domain privacy services

It is time to determine how this service can benefit you.

    Information privacy

Without safeguards, your personal details such as your full name, address, phone number, and email can become publicly accessible, which is something nobody desires.

Security of your physical and digital location

Hiding your data can make it challenging for scammers and provide you with increased protection from criminals looking to use online information for scams in the real world.

One form of protection is safeguarding against individuals who might exploit the expiration date of domain registrations to send deceptive renewal messages. Monitoring your domain’s expiration date and renewal process is advisable to mitigate risks posed by such opportunists.

Reduce the amount of unwanted emails

Sharing your email on a public platform such as Whois can attract spam creators who may use your information for unsolicited services that may not be relevant to you.
